Report: Government denies CFL's request for $30M loan
The Canadian federal government has denied the CFL's request for a $30 million interest-free loan, according to Dave Naylor of TSN.
The loan would have been used to put on a shortened 2020 season in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
It is unlikely the CFL will be able to play a 2020 campaign without government assistance, Naylor added. The league found out the government wouldn't be approving the funding on Friday.
The CFL, which has already postponed the beginning of its season in June due to an ordinance preventing fans from attending games, had been lobbying the federal government for financial assistance for months.
The loan was to be divvied up with $20 million allocated toward paying players, while $8 million was to be used to create a hub in Winnipeg. The remaining $2 million was to go to a contingency fund.
The Grey Cup has been awarded every year since 1919.
