Arsenal's Mesut Ozil named Germany's Player of the Year
World Cup holder Germany has named Arsenal's midfield maestro Mesut Ozil its Player of the Year for 2015, based on fan voting on the country's official football website.
It marks the fourth time the Schalke youth product has won the award after hoisting the Jules Rimet trophy last summer at Brazil's Maracan Stadium.
Year | Name | Club |
---|---|---|
2010 | Bastian Schweinsteiger | Bayern Munich |
2011 | Mesut Ozil | Real Madrid |
2012 | Mesut Ozil | Real Madrid |
2013 | Mesut Ozil | Arsenal |
2014 | Toni Kroos | Real Madrid |
2015 | Mesut Ozil | Arsenal |
Ozil, 27, received 45.9 percent of the 51,000 votes cast, easily beating out second-place finisher Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich and FC Koln's Jonas Hector, who was the only national team member to appear in all nine of Germany's matches during the calendar year, according to the federation's website.
Besides being a key component of Die Mannschaft's World Cup-winning squad, Ozil is enjoying a stellar season at the Emirates.
Sitting atop the Premier League table in hopes of winning its first league title since 2003-04, Ozil has been the heart of the Gunners, with 16 assists and three goals in 20 top-flight appearances, four assists short of the league record of 20 held by former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry.
