Bayern defeats Leipzig on penalties to reach DFB-Pokal Round of 16

The battle of the heavyweights in the DFB-Pokal came to a nerve-racking conclusion on Wednesday as Bayern Munich defeated 10-man RB Leipzig 5-4 in a penalty shootout, with Timo Werner missing Leipzig's final spot kick.

The two teams finished 1-1 after extra time, Emil Forsberg opening the scoring with a 68th-minute penalty. But, five minutes later, Thiago Alcantara found an equaliser, playing a long give-and-go before streaking into the box and heading past the 'keeper.

The match was marred by a 54th-minute red card issued to Naby Keita, which reduced Leipzig to 10 men. The Guinean was handed a second yellow card for fouling a streaking Robert Lewandowski, and has now been ejected three times in seven matches for club and country.

After Bayern was unable to capitalise on the numerical advantage, the two teams swapped penalty kicks with 100 percent accuracy until Werner's weak effort was saved by Sven Ulreich, seeing the Bavarian outfit through to the next round.

The draw for the Round of 16 will take place on Oct. 29, with matches scheduled for Dec. 19 and 20.
