Ryan Garcia arrested for felony vandalism in Beverly Hills
Boxing star Ryan Garcia was arrested Saturday for felony vandalism at a Beverly Hills hotel, a Beverly Hills Police Department watch commander confirmed to ESPN's Mike Coppinger.
The Waldorf Astoria hotel accused Garcia of causing an estimated $15,000 in damages to its property, according to police.
Garcia was booked at the Beverly Hills Police Department jail but later transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center due to a medical issue.
Garcia's attorney, Darin Chavez, told Coppinger that the boxer "may be charged with public intoxication." Chavez confirmed Garcia was taken to the hospital for "evaluation and treatment."
Police said they arrested Garcia at 5:45 p.m. local time after the driver who dropped Garcia off at the hotel called police. The hotel decided to press charges when police arrived.
Garcia allegedly damaged property in his hotel room and the hallway, police said in a statement to MMA Fighting's Damon Martin.
Garcia's manager, Lupe Valencia, said in a statement the arrest "comes at an extraordinarily challenging time for Ryan, as he has been grappling with devastating news regarding his mother's health."
"Ryan has been open about his struggles with mental health over the years, and at this time, he is dealing with an immense emotional burden," the statement read, per Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix. "Our team is committed to ensuring that he receives the appropriate help and care to address both his immediate and long-term well-being."
Garcia, 25, is coming off an upset win over WBC junior welterweight champion Devin Haney in April. However, Garcia tested positive for the banned substance ostarine in multiple drug tests related to the fight and is facing suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission.
