Report: Canelo vs. Saunders set for May
Canelo Alvarez is about to be a busy man.
Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders have agreed to a fight in May, sources told Mike Coppinger of The Athletic.
It's expected to be a super middleweight title unification bout on May 1 or May 8, but with one hitch. Alvarez will have to first defeat Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27 and not get injured in the process.
Alvarez (54-1-2) won a pair of 168-pound titles in a dominant decision against Callum Smith in December. Yildirim was quickly awarded the February fight as the mandatory challenger for those titles.
Saunders (30-0-0) is coming off a successful defense of his WBO super middleweight title against Martin Murray in December.
The two were originally scheduled to square off in May 2020 but the fight was called off due to COVID-19.
