If all goes well, Andy Murray could be back in singles action in just a couple of weeks.

The Scot is hopeful that he can return to singles competition at the Cincinnati Masters, though he all but ruled himself out of doing the same at the U.S. Open if he can't play in Ohio.

"Best-case scenario probably would be Cincinnati," Murray told reporters, according to BBC Sport. The men's singles event begins Aug. 11.

"Then if I wasn't able to play in Cincinnati, there's a good chance I would probably wait until after New York because I wouldn't want my first tournament to be playing best of five (sets)."

Though Murray suggested in January that his career might be over because of ongoing hip issues, the 32-year-old has been competing in doubles since June and is currently playing alongside his brother Jamie at the Citi Open in Washington.

He also competed in mixed doubles alongside Serena Williams at Wimbledon.

Murray has been taking a cautious approach since undergoing a hip resurfacing operation in late January.

"For the most part, I'm going to practice singles and play doubles to compete and then each week I'm just going to see," Murray said. "In terms of how I'm moving and feeling and pulling up the next day from these practices, I'm really happy with where I'm at. I think I'm quite close.

"If I keep progressing and feel good in three weeks' time then I'll play singles as soon as I'm ready. It's just to get to where I want to get to. I'll need to play matches and get a little bit more work done in the gym on my cardio."

Murray, a three-time Grand Slam winner, last competed in singles during the Brisbane International in January.
