Andy Murray withdraws from Wimbledon

Despite hopes he would be able to return from a hip injury for Wimbledon, Andy Murray withdrew from the event Sunday, citing concerns over playing best-of-five matches.

"It is with a heavy heart that I'm announcing that I'll be withdrawing from Wimbledon this year," Murray wrote in a statement to BBC Tennis. "I've made significant progress in practice and matches over the last 10 days, but after lengthy discussions with my team, we've decided that playing best-of-five matches might be a bit too soon in the recovery process."

Murray has battled hip issues for 12 months and played only three matches in the buildup to the event, none in the best-of-five format. It's been a year since the 31-year-old played in a major-championship-length match.

Murray said he will continue practicing and rehabbing with hard-court season approaching.
