Stan Wawrinka reached the French Open quarterfinals for the fourth time after beating Gael Monfils 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
The 2015 champion sealed victory on his third match point with a backhand down the line that the Frenchman could not return.
The third-seeded Swiss next plays No. 7 Marin Cilic of Croatia.
Cilic was leading 6-3, 3-0 against Kevin Anderson when the unseeded South African pulled out with a left thigh injury.
