Serena Williams defeats Caroline Wozniacki for 3rd straight U.S. Open title, 18th Grand Slam

Serena Williams continues to be untouchable at the U.S. Open, taking the second set of Sunday's final 6-3 from Caroline Wozniacki to win her third consecutive U.S. Open title 6-3, 6-3.

It's Williams' sixth U.S. Open title, and 18th career Grand Slam. She's a legend.

Williams broke Wozniacki in the first game to open the second set, holding serve to take a 2-0 lead. The women then traded holds to a 4-3 score, with neither really challenging for a break, as Williams seemed content to play to the score rather than push for a break once again.

The eighth game saw Williams fire a 116 MPH unreturned serve and she followed it with a cross-court winner to take a 5-3 edge. Wozniacki fought hard on her own serve in the ninth, making a great running backhand early, but Williams taking a 26-shot rally seemed to end things, with Williams ultimately breaking Wozniacki for the championship.

Williams powered through some issues with the unforced error - she had 23 in just two sets - flashing 120 MPH on an unreturned serve and hammering seven aces. She worked both her forehand and backhand to land winners, scoring 14 and seven, respectively, and outplayed Wozniacki in most rallies that extended beyond five shots.

Wozniacki flashed a few nice finesse shots at tough angles and settled into holding her serve in the second set, but largely squandered opportunities to take advantage of Williams' errors. She managed just three winners of her own, all on aces, lacking a single volley winner in the game.

The dominance of Williams is largely unsurprising, as the world's No. 1 ranked female is undefeated at the U.S. Open as a No. 1 seed, has won 22 consecutive matches at the tournament and has now notched her third straight U.S. Open title and sixth overall.

The win also marks Williams' fifth time winning a Grand Slam tournament without dropping a single set and her 18th Grand Slam victory overall. She is now tied with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for the fourth-most Grand Slams in women's tennis history, one behind Helen Wills Moody for third and six back of Margaret Court.
