The Williams sisters have pulled out of their first-round doubles match following a right elbow injury to Venus which she acquired in her second-round singles victory over Stefanie Voegele on Wednesday evening.

The news was posted on the official twitter account of the Australian Open shortly following the conclusion of Venus's singles match.

"Yeah. I'm managing it. I was really disappointed not to be able to play in New Zealand," Venus said of her injury after her status for the doubles competition was revealed, as reported by ESPN's Matt Wilansky.

"I was hoping to have the capacity to play both events here, but at this point I just need to be careful and just try to maintain myself."

Venus and Serena were poised to play against Timea Babos and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Wednesday afternoon.

This means the sisters will have to wait until the French Open in May for the next next opportunity to win their 15th Grand Slam title as a duo, which includes four Australian Open titles.
