No. 5 Pliskova advances to 2nd round in straight sets
Don't blink.
It didn't take long for fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova to book her place in the second round of the Australian open, 60 minutes to be exact, as she won 6-2, 6-0.
The big-serving Czech hit 26 winners as her opponent, Sara Sorribes Tormo struggled to find a solution to the mismatch in power, which inevitably ended in a Pliskova victory.
The first set lasted a mere 34 minutes as Pliskova won 6-2, controlling the majority of the rallies and showcasing her dominance in the inaugural meeting between the two players.
The second set followed the same pattern as the first and Pliskova continued to assert her powerful style of play, stemming from her serve.
Although the 24-year old only registered five aces in the whole match, she won 84 percent of first-serve points, good enough to prevent even one break point in the second set.
After 26 minutes of second set action, Pliskova found herself staring at match point, and she made no mistake with a perfectly timed backhand winner to finish the set 6-0.
The Monte Carlo native will face the winner of Anna Blinkova and Monica Niculescu (both unseeded) in the second round and she will be hoping to avoid the same fate as fourth-seeded Simona Halep who bowed out early, in the first round.
