David Luiz to captain Brazil in semifinal vs. Germany

David Luiz advanced Brazil into the semifinals with his stirring free kick against Colombia, and now he'll be tasked with the captain's armband in Belo Horizonte.

The Paris Saint-Germain center-back is confident he can fulfill the role of club teammate Thiago Silva, who will miss the match against Germany after having his appeal for a second yellow card upheld.

"I'm ready," Luiz said via Neil Ashton of The Daily Mail. "I'm vice-captain and this group is very easy to handle because everyone's very down to earth.

"It won't be a tough job at all."

With the pressures of being the host nation magnified with the absences of Silva and injured superstar striker Neymar, a lapse in guidance could prove costly for Brazil but the team appears to share the curly-locked captain's confidence.

"He's very caring and very attentive, no matter who he's with. It's not every day that you come across someone like him," Hulk said.

"The whole world knows what he has to offer on the pitch," he said, adding, "but as his teammates, we also know what a great person he is too."

Luiz will have a chance to prove his mettle Tuesday when Brazil vies for a spot in Sunday's World Cup final.
