Korea Republic 0, Belgium 1: Red Devils sweep Group H, move on to play U.S.
Three matches, three winning goals scored in the last 15 minutes, and nine points. Could you craft a better start to Belgium's first World Cup appearance since 2002?
On the heels of a 1-0 win over Korea Republic, the Red Devils are moving on the the Round of 16 as one of the few teams in this tournament to sweep the group stage.
It wasn't necessarily pretty Thursday - Belgium dug their heels in after Steven Defour's first-half red card left them undermanned - but they came up big in the match's closing minutes and left victorious. If that last part sounds familiar, it's because this team is making a habit of late heroics.
This time, defender Jan Vertonghen scored the winning goal. He made a run and punched in a juicy rebound off a shot by teammate Divock Origi in the 77th minute.
Next up for Belgium is a match with Group G runners-up the U.S. on July 1 in Salvador.
For Korea Republic, it was a tournament manager Hong Myung-bo's side might prefer to forget. Eliminated with the loss, the Taegeuk Warriors leave Brazil with just one one point from three matches.
