France's Franck Ribery out of World Cup with back problem

Add one more name to the list of superstars who will not be competing at the World Cup in Brazil due to injury.

Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery has been ruled out of the French squad after failing to prove his fitness in time for the tournament. He will be replaced on the roster by Montpellier attacking midfielder Remy Cabella. There were reports as far back as two weeks ago suggesting that Ribery could be doubtful for the World Cup because of a recurring back injury.

However, France manager Didier Deschamps played down those fears by not only naming Ribery to the squad, but also suggesting that he might play a part in the friendlies scheduled in the lead up to the tournament.

It's certainly a blow to the team, as France will be in tough to emerge out of Group E, competing with Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras. However, Ribery's setback does present an interesting opportunity for Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann. The 23-year-old understudy could provide France with the playmaking ability it would otherwise be missing in Ribery's absence.

Clement Grenier has also been ruled out of France's World Cup squad with a thigh problem. The Lyon midfielder will be replaced by Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
