Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho confirmed to reporters that first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea missed the team's 3-0 win over Sunderland on Sunday due to a hip injury.

De Gea, who had previously started 63 matches in a row, was replaced by Sergio Romero in the Red Devils' starting lineup at the Stadium of Light, with Joel Pereira on the bench behind him.

While Mourinho had only revealed De Gea was dealing with a "small problem" prior to kick off, the Portuguese tactician shed further light on De Gea's injury in his post-match interview.

"He has a problem with his hip," Mourinho confirmed to BBC Sport, as quoted by the club's official website. "When he dives he feels it a little bit. It's good for him to have a rest."

As a result of the minor injury, Romero had a chance to flex his fingers ahead of a Europa League fixture away at Anderlecht on Thursday, with De Gea set to make a potential return in time for a Premier League clash against league leader Chelsea at Old Trafford.

"It's good for Sergio Romero to play before Brussels," Mourinho added. "De Gea will probably be fit for Chelsea - yes, if he's in good condition."
