Newcastle's De Jong joins PSV on loan

Newcastle United attacker Siem De Jong has joined PSV Eindhoven on a season-long loan, in a move that on the surface appears uninteresting but is rife with compelling storylines.

De Jong, who signed with the Magpies in 2014 on a six-year deal after wearing the captain's armband at Ajax, will now suit up for the Amsterdam club's Eredivisie rival PSV, according to a statement on the Eindhoven side's website.

PSV travels to the capital to face Ajax on Dec. 18, and De Jong is certain to get an early Christmas present from supporters of his former club if the precedent set last year in welcoming Feyenoord shot-stopper Kenneth Vermeer to the Amsterdam ArenA is replicated.

A potential clash against his former side isn't the only intriguing element of the loan move, as De Jong, 27, will now play alongside his younger brother Luuk, 25.

Like Siem, Luuk has experienced an underwhelming spell with Newcastle. The PSV skipper made 12 appearances with nary a goal for the club on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014.

"Once before we had the chance to play together. Then Siem went to Newcastle, I could have stayed there, but I chose to go to PSV. It's great that we can play together now anyway," the younger De Jong said Monday.

Siem's time at Newcastle has been equally tepid. He has just one goal in 22 appearances over two seasons amid a tenure littered with injuries and setbacks, including a thigh concern that saw him miss 25 matches and a collapsed lung that sidelined the six-time capped Oranje attacking mid for a chunk of the 2014-15 campaign.

Rafa Benitez and Co. will be hopeful De Jong's Dutch sabbatical will help him return to the form that saw him bag seven goals and a helper during the 2013-14 season, in which Ajax captured its fourth consecutive league crown.
