NORTON, Mass. - Luke Donald took a big step toward advancing to the next FedEx Cup playoff event in Chicago. Jason Day took a small step toward No. 1 in the world.

As for Jordan Spieth? He took another step in the wrong direction.

Donald advanced to the second playoff event at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and then he managed blustery conditions at the TPC Boston on Friday for a 4-under 67 and a share of the lead with Colt Knost among the early starters.

Day needs to win to reach No. 1 in the world, and he opened with three straight birdies. The wind kept him at bay and he wound up with a 68.

Spieth opened with a 75, his third straight round over par. Rory McIlroy shot a 70.
