Tiger Woods followed up an impressive performance in Round 1 of the Wyndham Championship on Thursday with another strong outing Friday.

Woods shot a 5-under 65 to improve to 11-under par for the tournament, putting him into a tie for the clubhouse lead with Tom Hoge.

"It was a grind today," Woods told Golf Channel's Todd Lewis. "I didn't quite hit it as good as I did yesterday. I couldn't quite get my iron game where I was underneath the hole to where I could get some nice firm looks, but I hung in there with my speed and ended up OK."

After a disappointing PGA Championship that saw him miss a third consecutive cut at a major tournament, he appears poised to contend for a title heading into the weekend.

Woods hasn't won a PGA Tour event in more than two years, so a victory this week in North Carolina could get the 39-year-old back on track. It would also allow him to qualify for the FedEX Cup. He needs at least a solo second-place finish this weekend to enter the playoff.

“I just got to take it a day at a time,” Woods said. “I want to win this tournament. I came here to win it, and right now I’m in good shape.”
