Rory McIlroy ruptured a ligament in his left ankle while playing soccer less than two weeks before the start of his Open Championship title defense.

The Northern Irish golfer gave no indication how long he will be out in the announcement Monday on his Instagram account, only saying that he's ''working hard to get back as soon as I can.''

McIlroy's spokesman, Sean O'Flaherty, confirmed that his client will miss this weekend's Scottish Open, but his status for The Open won't be determined until the end of the week.

The season's third major tees off July 16 at St. Andrews in Scotland.
