Rory McIlroy will not be playing on the weekend at the BMW PGA Championship.

The top-rated golfer in the world struggled in Round 2 at Wentworth to a 6-over 78, unable to make 1-over par to enter the weekend.

McIlroy missed the cut by four shots, finishing at 5-over 149. His round featured a few mental collapses, resulting in six bogeys and one double-bogey on the 11th.

A day earlier, McIlroy let his emotions show on the par-5 17th, throwing his 3-wood across the fairway.

McIlroy claimed he was mentally fatigued after his opening round because of his rigorous schedule. He had played in five consecutive tournaments.

The 26-year-old sees a silver lining in his early exit, though, as he'll now prepare for the Irish Open. McIlroy said he plans to play the course before the competition begins May 28.

"Disappointing, obviously but, you know, it's a weekend off - which I probably need and get ready for next week," McIlroy told Sky Sports following his exit.
