Ryder Cup rosters finalized: here's how they stack up

The 24 men who'll throw etiquette by the wayside for country and continent at the 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland were finalized this week, and the end result reveals quite a juxtaposition.

Paul McGinley's Europe, led by the dominant force that is Rory McIlroy, are steaming into the competition with a chance to earn a third straight win on home soil. Four of the top five players in the world were joined by a veteran trio of captain's picks in Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and a man who'll understand the lay of the land, Scotland's Stephen Gallacher.

On the U.S. side, Tom Watson rounded out his beleaguered dozen with Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Hunter Mahan. While the selections come across as if they were pulled out of a hat, it's clear that Watson coveted international experience over current form. Ryder Cup veterans Bradley and Simpson will leave FedEx Cup standings leader Chris Kirk at home despite combining to make just three major championship cuts this season.

The scales do appear to be swaying in one direction, but statistics don't reveal any major discrepancies.

  • Europe has the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked players in the world, but Team USA's average World Ranking (16.25) is better than Europe's (18.58)
  • Each team has three rookies, but the United States' trio has 21 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season to only five from Europe
  • Team USA's Ryder Cup returnees sport just a 46 percent winning percentage in the competition compared to Europe's 61 percent
  • Europe has just six PGA Tour wins this season, but three of them were at majors

Here's a look at the full rosters with their World Ranking.
