The Washington Capitals don't know when John Carlson will be back in the lineup.
The defenseman, who was previously considered day to day with a lower-body injury, was further evaluated Tuesday and will not travel with the team for the start of a five-game road trip beginning Thursday in Carolina, according to head coach Barry Trotz.

The club is expected to recall a defenseman in his absence.
Carlson has recorded six goals and 21 assists in 34 games, and the Capitals' well-oiled machine will be tested while he's out of the lineup.
