Trotz impressed with Holtby's otherworldly play in shutout win

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby stole the show at the Verizon Center on Monday, stopping all 33 shots he faced to backstop his team to a 1-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

With the Capitals out-chanced for the majority of the game, head coach Barry Trotz was quick to point out his goaltender's stellar play.

"He absolutely deserved the shutout," Trotz said, according to Isabelle Khurshadyan of The Washington Post. "He's been one of our top players this year. Tonight, he was by far our best player.

"There wasn't even anybody in his universe tonight."

The win allowed Holtby to keep up with New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist - who also had a shutout Monday - for the NHL lead in wins (12) and keep pace to surpass the 41-win total from his breakout campaign last season.

He'll have a chance to add to his totals with the Capitals playing their next three games against teams currently outside the playoff picture - the Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
