Mathew Barzal received an extended look from the New York Islanders, but will not be joining the first-round likes of Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, and Noah Hanifin after all.

New York sent Barzal back to the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League on Sunday night as part of the team's latest round of cuts, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Barzal scored a goal and added an assist in four starts, and made a lasting impression on Garth Snow and the braintrust that traded into the first round to select him at No. 16 overall.

In addition to Barzal, Kirill Petrov, Scott Mayfield, Kevin Czuczman, and Adam Pelech were assigned to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
