Oilers GM Chiarelli hoping to add goalie prior to NHL draft

Peter Chiarelli is on the verge of making his first big move as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers.

Sure, he's basically guaranteed to call Connor McDavid's name at the NHL draft, but he's also hoping to have a new goaltender in place prior to Friday's selection process.

"My guess is we'll probably be able to do something before the draft," he told reporters Monday of the club's need to upgrade the position.

"But I'm not completely sure. At the end of the day it takes two to tango so you have to have the right deal in place."

The Oilers have been linked to Cam Talbot of the New York Rangers, and could be interested in acquiring one of Craig Anderson or Robin Lehner of the Ottawa Senators.

"We've had discussions with teams," said Chiarelli. "There are more goalies than those number of teams, so we're in a bit of a buyers market. And we have multiple picks so I seem to be a popular potential trading partner on that front."

If Chiarelli can't complete a trade, he said he's willing to seek help via free agency.

Either way, it's shaping up to be a busy week for the Oilers' new management team.
