Niklas Svedberg: Signs With KHL Team

Svedberg signed a one-year deal with Salavat of the KHL on Sunday, CSN New England reports.

Analysis:

Svedberg was set to become a restricted free agent with the Bruins, but he'll instead spend a year in Russia after backing up Tuukka Rask in 2014-15. The 25-year-old Swede played well in limited action, finishing the season with a 7-5-1 record, 2.33 GAA and .918 save percentage. The Bruins have an intriguing goaltending prospect in the form of 21-year-old Malcolm Subban, but they may prefer to find a veteran backup for Rask. As for Svedberg, he noted that he'll be heading to Europe with the hope of gaining more ice time in the hopes of showcasing himself for a starting opportunity with an NHL club in 2016-17.
