UMass tops Notre Dame in longest Division I hockey game ever
Massachusetts picked up a 4-3 overtime victory against Notre Dame on Friday in the longest hockey game in Division I history.
The first round game of the Hockey East tournament started on Friday but wasn't completed until the early hours of Saturday. Shane Walsch gave UMass the win when he scored in the fifth overtime, ending the game with 151 minutes and 42 seconds played.
That topped the previous record of 150 minutes and 22 seconds set in March of 2012 in a game between Quinnipiac and Union.
It was a tremendous night for both goaltenders, as Notre Dame's Cal Petersen set a Divison I record with 87 saves despite suffering the loss. UMass netminder Steve Mastalerz was almost equally as busy, stopping 75 shots.
The two teams will be at it again less than 24 hours later, as they will play game two of their three game series on Saturday night.
