NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at Winnipeg

Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexander Steen scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the St. Louis Blues over the Winnipeg Jets, 2-1, on Thursday.

Patrik Berglund scored in regulation for the Blues, who have won six in a row against the Jets. Brian Elliott made 30 saves.

"It was like a playoff game, lots at stake for both teams," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock.

Mark Scheifele lit the lamp for the Jets, who have dropped three of four. Michael Hutchinson stopped 28-of-29 shots.

The Jets had a chance to break a 1-1 tie when David Backes went off for an illegal check to the head with 56.8 seconds left in regulation. The home team failed to score on the power play that carried over into overtime.

The Blues then had their opportunity when Scheifele was called for tripping 2:03 into the extra session. But Hutchinson held strong in net to keep things even.

Vladimir Tarasenko put St. Louis ahead in the second round of the shootout. Andrew Ladd briefly kept Winnipeg alive, but Steen snuck a backhander past Hutchinson to win it.

"It was a battle right to the end," said Ladd. "I thought we played a really strong game. Obviously you get to the shootout and anything can happen, and we ended up on the wrong side of it. But I thought it was a pretty solid effort from start to finish."

Berglund broke a scoreless tie at the 18:11 mark of the second period, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush.

Scheifele tied things up at 3:14 of the third when he scored off Ladd's pass from behind the net.
