Maple Leafs trade Ashton, Broll to Lightning for conditional pick

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning have made a minor trade.

The Lightning acquired winger David Broll and forward Carter Ashton in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2016, the Maple Leafs announced Friday.

Broll had no points in 21 games with the AHL's Toronto Marlies in 2014-15, along with nine points in 16 games for the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears.

Ashton registered no points in seven games with the Maple Leafs, but did record four goals and four assists in 12 contests with the Marlies after registering 23 points in 24 games for the AHL club last season.

The Maple Leafs were maxed out at 50 contracts before making the trade, so the deal gives them some flexibility going forward, both in terms of roster spots and the salary cap.

As for the Lightning, the move was likely done to provide depth for their injury-riddled AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.
