Varone played just 50 seconds in the first period against Philadelphia on Saturday.

Analysis:

Varone and Cody Hodgson were in head coach Ted Nolan's doghouse Saturday, each playing just 50 seconds in the first frame. Varone had a two-goal game earlier this season but his play has fallen off the map a little and Nolan wanted to send a message to the team that only those playing to his level of standard will get the ice time. Varone has yet to find a permanent spot in the Sabres lineup and more subpar performances could mean a demotion back to the AHL. Nolan is notoriously tough on young players and if Varone doesn't get his ice time, he won't be able to produce offensively. His fantasy value is limited until he gets a regular role. His ice time has declined in his past four games.
