Over the years, the NHL All-Star Game has produced its share of highlight-reel plays and emotional tributes.

From legendary performances to poignant ovations, here are the five most memorable All-Star Game moments:

Chicago Stadium fans drown out national anthem

Days after the United States enters the Gulf War in 1991, fans at Chicago Stadium honor the troops by drowning out anthem singer Wayne Messmer with applause during his performance of the Star-Spangled Banner.

The Chicago Blackhawks move to the United Center in 1995, but the city's tradition of cheering through the national anthem lives on to this day.

Gretzky scores 4 goals in 1 period

Wayne Gretzky becomes the first player to score four goals in an All-Star Game in 1983.

He tallies all of them in the third period, setting another record with the most goals in a single frame. The Great One is named the game's Most Valuable Player.

Owen Nolan calls his shot

San Jose Sharks forward Owen Nolan caps off a hat trick in 1997 by picking his spot on a breakaway and beating Dominik Hasek.

The shot is made to look even more impressive thanks to the infamous FoxTrax glow puck that leaves a comet trail behind the successful wrist shot.

Mario's record 6th point wins it in overtime

Mario Lemieux sets a record of his own while showing a flair for the dramatic at the 1988 All-Star Game in in St. Louis.

Lemieux's third goal of the game gives the Wales Conference a 6-5 victory over the Campbell Conference, and his six points (including three assists) are the most in the history of the event.

Mats Naslund registers five assists, which remains the second-best point total in All-Star Game history.

Gordie Howe gets long ovation in return to Detroit

Mr. Hockey plays in final All-Star Game in 1980, appearing in the contest for a record 23rd time.

Howe shares an emotional moment with the fans in Detroit during the pregame introductions at Joe Louis Arena, acknowledging an ovation that lasts for several minutes. 

Howe picks up an assist on the Wales Conference's final goal in a 6-3 win.
