Report: Babcock looking for a 5-year deal worth over $3 million annually

Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock remains without a contract extension for next season.

During Insider Trading on Tuesday, TSN's Darren Dreger reported there is a deal on the table, though it's not to Babcock's liking.

"It's believed that the offer that the Red Wings have on the table for Mike Babcock mirrors the contract extension that Ken Holland, the General Manager, agreed to and signed in the summer," Dreger said. "So you're talking four years at around $3 million dollars - slightly under $3 million dollars."

While that sounds fair, Babcock doesn't want to sign that contract and is looking for something a little more substantial than $3 million.

"Babcock is looking for a bit more, I'm told that it's at least 5 year and better than $3 million dollars," Dreger explained.

Although it sounds like the negotiation process is stuck on a dollar amount, that's not the main reason Babcock wants to stay in Detroit.

" ... it's not just about the money, it's about knowing that he can win in Detroit or elsewhere and making sure that his future is secure."

Babcock has coached the Red Wings for 10 years, never missing the playoffs and winning one Stanley Cup.
