MTL 3, COL 2: P.K. Subban powers Canadiens to decisive victory over hapless Avalanche

Jean-Yves Ahern / USA TODAY Sports

The Montreal Canadiens brought their A-game on Saturday night, while the Colorado Avalanche brought their third-string goaltender. The result was predictable as the Canadiens cruised to a 3-2 victory that was nowhere near as closely contested as the score might make it seem.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Montreal Canadiens defender P.K. Subban was absolutely dominant Saturday, scoring two goals in the contest (it was his third career two-goal game). Subban's first goal was just a classic one-timer slapshot on the power play, but his second goal was a thing of beauty. In an extraordinary sequence, Subban sped out of the penalty box, collected a Hail Mary pass from a teammate, circled the Avalanche net, and then made an outstanding deke in the slot before beating Colorado goaltender Calvin Pickard cleanly.
  • Though they trailed for most of the game, the Avalanche still managed just a 42 percent share of even-strength shot attempts. With their offense sputtering and their goaltenders wounded - the Avalanche need to do better at controlling the flow of play if they hope to turn their season around.
  • Avalanche forward Matt Duchene was by far Colorado's most dangerous player. H e managed 10 shots on goal and probably deserved better than the lone goal he tallied on Saturday night.
  • 20-year-old Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk managed a goal, an assist and five shots on net in another impressive outing.
