NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Columbus
Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - A second-period goal by Matt Calvert wound up being the difference as the Columbus Blue Jackets held on for a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.
Calvert gave the Blue Jackets a 3-0 lead, but Mason Raymond and Josh Jooris, making his NHL debut, scored in the third period for the Flames.
"We put on quite an effort, but we just couldn't get that tying goal," said Flames head coach Bob Hartley.
Mark Giordano hit the post inside two minutes.
Ryan Johansen and Jack Skille had first-period goals for Columbus, which improved to 3-1-0 on the season. Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves in his 100th game with the Blue Jackets.
Columbus head coach Todd Richards felt the team got away from its game once it built a 2-0 lead.
"What we have to learn is just continue to do the same things that allowed us to have some success," he said.
Karri Ramo gave up three goals on 26 shots for the Flames, who were seeking a third straight win on their road trip.
Raymond tapped in a pass from Curtis Glencross to put Calgary on the board at 2:21 of the third, shortly after Columbus killed Calvert's charging penalty.
Jooris, recalled Thursday from Adirondack of the American Hockey League, scored off a set play at 11:43 following a faceoff win, collecting Giordano's stretch pass from behind the Calgary net and beating Bobrovsky on a breakaway.
"He's a good young man. He wants to learn. He brings a lot. He's responsible defensively and he gave us a big goal," Hartley said about the 24- year-old Jooris, an undrafted free agent.
Columbus got off to a good start, scoring twice before the game was six minutes old.
Mark Letestu skated out of the left corner with the puck and slid a backhand pass to Skille in the slot. Skille beat Ramo on the glove side 2:59 into the game.
Johansen gave the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead on a power play. Johansen, who missed training camp due to a contract holdout, moved into the right circle and buried a backhand feed from Nick Foligno at 5:21.
Calvert scored at 7:55 of the second period, pushing the puck across the goal line after being cross-checked from behind by Calgary defenseman Kris Russell.
