Karlsson led Ottawa in scoring last season with 74 points, four shy of his career-best set in 2011-12, when he was selected as the best defenseman in the NHL. He replaces Jason Spezza, who served as captain for one season before being traded to the Dallas Stars.
Karlsson is the second Swedish player to be named captain of the Senators.
