Fleury on future in Pittsburgh: 'It’s where I want to win, it’s where I want to play'

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury enters the 2014-15 season with one year left on his contract, but made no bones about his desire to remain with the club for the rest of his career in an interview Wednesday.

"I love the city, I love the team,” Fleury said, as per the team's official website. “It’s where I want to win, it’s where I want to play.”

Fleury, drafted first overall by the Penguins in 2003, has appeared in 531 regular-season and 93 playoff games, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 2009. His game, however, has tailed off in recent years - especially in the postseason - and new general manager Jim Rutherford did not make it a priority to sign the 29-year-old to a contract extension this summer.

For his part, Fleury doesn't appear too concerned about the relatively uncertain nature of his contract status.

“I think for a player it’s always nice to have the certainty of a contract," he said. "You never know what can happen. But at the same time, I’m not too worried.

"Pittsburgh has been great to me. It’s a great place.”

Fleury continued:

I like everything about the team here. The organization has always treated me very well, given me my chance in the NHL. If I can end my career here, I’ll be very happy about that. Sometimes you wonder what it would be like [to test unrestricted free agency], but at the same time, I’m happy here and I don’t want to go anywhere.

Fleury had 39 wins and posted a .915 save percentage in 64 games last season; repeating that performance, coupled with a strong showing in the playoffs, would likely be enough to entice the club into retaining his services moving forward.
