Ellis and the Predators are reportedly not close to signing a new contract, according to Josh Cooper of the Tennessean.

Analysis:

Ellis, currently a restricted free agent, finally put together a decent season last year, posting 27 points (6G, 21A) in 80 games. However, his development has still been far too slow for the Preds' liking, considering his stellar offensive contributions in junior (300+ points in four seasons from 2007-2011). Assuming the two sides can agree on a deal for the upcoming season, Ellis will likely return to his usual role as a second-pairing, second power play defenseman. However, the Preds are well-stocked with blue line talent, so they are likely not in a huge rush to get a deal done with Ellis if it means overpaying him. For fantasy purposes, be sure to keep him off your draft lists as long as he remains unsigned.
