Bettman on future Islanders owners: 'I like them and find them engaging'

Lauren Mackson / USA TODAY Sports

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is - hold onto your hats - an admirer of incoming New York Islanders owners Scott Malkin and Jonathan Ledecky, but he's not willing to say much about them besides that.

"We're going through the franchise transfer process, so it would be premature and inappropriate for me to comment on it until we complete that process," Bettman told Neil Best of Newsday on Thursday.

"Personally I like them and find them engaging, but ultimately it's a decision that gets made by the Board of Governors."

Bettman also defended current Islanders owner and frequent media punching bag Charles Wang, to the shock of monocle wearers everywhere.

"The responsibility for what's happened really lies with Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead," Bettman said of relocating the Islanders from Nassau Coliseum to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. "For the fans in Nassau, not just of the Islanders, but of circuses and rock concerts and the like, it's a shame.

"The great news is the Islanders have a terrific arena to go to and this is an exciting opportunity for the franchise moving forward."
