When the Ottawa Senators announced a three-year contract for goaltender Robin Lehner on Thursday, many assumed it was the first step towards parting ways with veteran Craig Anderson, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Let's tap the brakes on that, shall we?

According to Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen, the club engaged in talks with Anderson's agent in regards to a contract extension.

Anderson, 33, made 53 appearances for the Senators in 2013-14, posting a record of 25-16-8, with four shutouts and a .911 save percentage.

Decent enough numbers for a non-playoff team, but with a younger Lehner (23) with seemingly more upside breathing down his neck for starts, it's uncertain whether Ottawa will be able to give him the opportunity to be a clear No. 1 goalie moving forward.
