Canucks sign 1st-round pick Jared McCann to entry-level contract

The Vancouver Canucks have agreed to terms with Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds forward Jared McCann - who they selected with the 24th overall pick at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft - on a three-year, entry-level contract, the club announced on Tuesday.

McCann, 18, managed 27 goals and 62 points in his first draft eligible season with the Greyhounds. A sturdy two-way player with a grumpy on-ice demeanor, McCann has an excellent shot and is a natural centerman.

New Toronto Maple Leafs assistant general manager Kyle Dubas, who was McCann's general manager with the Greyhounds prior to accepting his new job this week, recently discussed McCann's performance with "the Soo" at length with canucksarmy.com.

The Canucks have now signed one of their two first-round draft picks from the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The club has still yet to sign Jake Virtanen, a power forward with the Calgary Hitmen who was selected with the sixth overall pick. Virtanen is still recovering from shoulder surgery and isn't expected to return to on-ice activities until October.
