Report: Avalanche's J.S. Giguere to retire

Colorado Avalanche goaltender J.S. Giguere is ready to hang up his skates and pads and call it a career, according to a report from TVA's Renaud Lavoie. The veteran will reportedly make his decision official after speaking with his agent and the players association.

The 37-year-old goaltender was a prototypical blocking netminder and had a seven-year, six-season run of dominance for the Anaheim Ducks from 2001-02 through 2007-08. During that time he was named an All-Star, he won a Conn Smythe trophy awarded to the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007.

In his twilight years Giguere had settled into a backup role with the Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche. He famously called out his teammates for a Las Vegas vacation during a losing swoon a year ago, and housed superstar rookie Nathan MacKinnon this year. He also took a curtain call with Teemu Selanne at the Honda Center, in what was one of the season's best hockey moments.

Regardless of whether or not Giguere had decided to retire, it became clear that he wouldn't be back with the Avalanche this season when the club re-signed Reto Berra this Spring.
