Blues' Kevin Shattenkirk: Actively being shopped

Shattenkirk nixed a trade that included a long-term extension six weeks ago, Jermey Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Blues are now believed to be shopping Shattenkirk as a "rental."

Analysis:

The Blues and another club had agreed on a deal that would have given Shattenkirk a seven-year, $42 million contract, but the defenseman turned it down. While Shattenkirk doesn't have a no-trade clause in his current contract, for the Blues to find a trade partner willing to give them the return they're seeking, he would have to agree to a long-term extension. Shattenkirk, who is a pending unrestricted free agent, presumably sees free agency giving him more options in terms of choosing a destination.
