Ice-cold Cammalleri scratched: 'This is new territory for me'

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

A prolonged goal-scoring drought has earned Mike Cammalleri a seat in the press box.

The New Jersey Devils winger, though fourth on the team in points and fifth in goals, hasn't scored in his last 18 games, and has found the net just once over his last 33 contests.

Thus, the Devils have decided to give Cammalleri a game off, which isn't exactly something the 34-year-old is used to.

Cammalleri's drought further outlines the scoring problems New Jersey has endured all season long. The Devils average just 2.25 goals per game (29th), and own a power play producing at a 16.3 percent clip (24th).

After career years from forwards Kyle Palmieri and Adam Henrique in 2015-16 and the addition of Taylor Hall in the summer, it appeared New Jersey's offense was ready take off this season, but 57 games in and sitting one spot closer to last place rather than the playoffs in the Eastern Conference standings, it's been much the opposite.
