Red Wings' Petr Mrazek: Unlikely to avoid arbitration hearing

Mrazek is attempting to secure a two-year contract from the Red Wings at an average annual value of $5 million, MLive.com reports. That amount is significantly higher than what Detroit is prepared to offer.

Analysis:

If the Wings had it their way, the talented backstop would get an extension worth a reported $2.7 million in 2016-17 and $3.15 million the following season - that's a substantial difference in valuation and it appears that the two sides will have trouble avoiding Wednesday's arbitration hearing. Mrazek won 27 regular-season games for the Winged Wheel in 2015-16, complemented by a 2.33 GAA. Veteran goalie Jimmy Howard was wildly inconsistent and thus is slated to serve in a backup role behind Mrazek this fall.
