Stars' Jamie Benn: Signs eight-year extension with Dallas

Benn (abdomen) signed an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with Dallas on Friday, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Analysis:

Benn, who will require around six weeks to recover from Thursday's surgery to repair a core muscle injury, finished second in the league with 89 points -- only behind Chicago's Patrick Kane (106) -- and played in every game last season. The 26-year-old wunderkind also led the Stars in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 15 points in 13 contests, and it should surprise no one that he just landed a long-term, lucrative deal. The contract length and average annual value ($9.5 million) for Benn compares to the terms obtained by Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin in June of 2013.
