Bean turned 18 two weeks prior to the draft, with 119 Western Hockey League games under his belt. Over the course of two seasons with the Calgary Hitmen, the young defenseman has averaged 0.87 points per game, with 29 goals and 74 assists.

Impressive offensive numbers, but don't be fooled into thinking he's not strong in his own end.

From Elite Prospects:

He displays natural talent in the offensive end, but also plays a complete defensive game in his own end. He has a proactive stick and boxes the opposition out, limiting lanes.

All-in-all, the type of all-around defenseman that you want to have on the ice as much as possible.

He entered the draft as the 15th-ranked North American skater and fifth-ranked North American defenseman, according to NHL central scouting.

Bean adds to an impressive group of defensive prospects assembling in Carolina, a group that includes previous first-round selections Noah Hanifin and Haydn Fleury.
