Red Wings' Dylan Larkin: Earns rookie of the year team honor

Larkin was named the Red Wings rookie of the year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association on Tuesday.

Analysis:

Not surprisingly, this was a unanimous selection. Aside from a six-game stint with AHL Grand Rapids in the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs, Larkin avoided the minor leagues and was ready to showcase his scoring skills in the NHL this season. In 80 regular-season games, the 19-year-old sank a team-high 23 goals to go along with 22 helpers. His blazing speed - he became the all-time fastest skater at the All-Star Skills Competition - allows him to break up the rush in the defensive zone. In fact, by a wide margin, his plus-11 rating led all Red Wings in 2015-16. With Pavel Datsyuk flirting with the idea of returning to Russia and Henrik Zetterberg seemingly past his prime, it will be up to Larkin to keep shining offensively. Some might fear that he'll go through a sophomore slump, but the upside appears to outweigh the risk when it comes to Larkin. Catch him if you can.
