NHL Game Summary - Toronto at Colorado

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Tanguay scored the deciding marker in the third round of the shootout, as Colorado nipped Toronto, 4-3, on Thursday at Pepsi Center.

Each of the first three shooters -- Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene for the hosts and Tyler Bozak for the visitors -- converted their chances. James van Riemsdyk of the Leafs followed by missing the net on his shot to end the second round, then Tanguay beat Jonathan Bernier with a wrister to end the contest.

Duchene, Tanguay and Nick Holden lit the lamp in regulation for the Avalanche, who put a three-game skid to rest. Reto Berra came up with 33 saves over the game's first 65 minutes.

"Berra was fantastic in the shootout," Colorado forward Gabriel Landeskog said. "We stuck together. Nothing was going to stop us tonight."

Bozak, Phil Kessel and Richard Panik tallied for the Maple Leafs, who have lost two in a row following three straight wins. Bernier suffered the setback despite 31 stops.

"I think we came out hard in the first," said Bernier. "It was a great effort tonight to get a point. We played really well in overtime."

Toronto lost forward Daniel Winnik early in the contest. He was carted off the ice on a stretcher after absorbing a hit from Avs defenseman Jan Hejda and smacking the back of his head as the two players were tangled up. Winnik was not taken to a hospital, and the Leafs reported a short time later that he was alert and moving.

Holden opened the scoring 31 seconds in, potting a MacKinnon pass from the left circle, then Kessel equalized for the Leafs with 3:40 left before the first intermission by knocking a puck out of mid-air at the left post and whacking it past Berra.

Bozak converted a van Riemsdyk pass in the low slot for a power-play goal and 2-1 Leafs edge with 4:43 played in the second, but 60 seconds later the Avs tied it on Tanguay's breakaway score.

Duchene put Colorado ahead with 8:15 left in regulation on a successful stuffer try, but Panik sent the game into overtime with a low shot from the slot with 1:16 to play.
