Report: Dolphins remain intent on restructuring Wake's contract

Melina Vastola / USA TODAY Sports

So far this offseason, the Miami Dolphins and defensive end Cameron Wake have been unable to agree to a restructured contract, but the team has yet to close the door on negotiations.

The Dolphins remain intent on extracting some cap savings from Wake's deal, a source told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Negotiations reportedly didn't go well when the parties spoke during the NFL combine, with the Dolphins and Wake believed to have been far apart in their expectations for the restructure.

The 34-year-old Wake suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture in October, a historically devastating injury, especially for players towards the end of their careers.

Because of the injury, it appears the Dolphins are hoping to protect themselves if Wake in unable to return to form next season.

Wake is slated for a $9.8-million cap hit in 2016, and although they aren't pressed up against the cap - with $17 million available - they presumably are looking for some extra money to snap up more free agents this offseason.
