Buccaneers solidify secondary with Vernon Hargreaves

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III out of Florida with the 11th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Buccaneers get the player many connected to them in mock drafts - and they do so after trading down from No. 9 with the Chicago Bears and receiving the Bears' fourth-round pick as compensation.

In Hargreaves, the Buccaneers get one of the draft's premier athletes and a player with a nose for the football. Hargreaves should step into the secondary as a Day 1 starter and greatly improve the team's highly suspect secondary.

Vernon Hargreaves III Bio

Position: CB
School: Florida
College Experience: Junior
Height: 5-10

Strengths

  • Twitchy. Has elite quickness and an ability to instantly trust his reads and react to the ball. Has quick enough hands to punch balls out of a receivers' grasp and pluck passes out of the air.
  • Instinctive. Can diagnose plays quickly and mirror receivers' routes while keeping his eyes in the backfield.
  • Great body control. Can bend and contort his body to make plays on the ball without interfering with receivers or taking himself out of plays.
  • Tough. Finishes his tackles and isn't afraid to come up and make plays in the run game.

Weaknesses

  • Short. Is susceptible to larger receivers going up over top of him, and can play smaller than his size.
  • Over aggressive. Can get caught with his eyes in the backfield on double moves and pump fakes.
  • Lacking recovery speed. Doesn't have speed necessary to recover from mistakes and misreads.
